Forget milk and bread, Tesco is offering something a little more… peculiar. The supermarket giant has launched a line of life-sized cardboard cutouts featuring a range of A-list celebrities. For £38.99 each, you can bring home your favorite actor, singer, or even animated character, and it’s not just the usual suspects.
The collection features some eyebrow-raising choices. There’s a lineup of Tory politicians, including Theresa May and Matt Hancock, for those with political leanings. If your taste is more left-leaning, there’s Jeremy Corbyn. But if politics aren’t your thing, there’s 1975’s Matty Healy, or perhaps you’d prefer another of Taylor Swift’s exes—Tom Hiddleston and Jake Gyllenhaal are also available. No matter your celebrity niche, Tesco seems to have you covered. A diehard Annalena Baerbock fan? Don’t worry, Tesco has you covered. There’s even a cutout of William Shakespeare himself.
This bizarre product offering has been met with a mix of amusement and confusion from shoppers. On social media, people are joking about the unexpected addition to their shopping lists. One user, @ciaraaelliss, quipped: ‘Oh wait you’re nipping to Tesco? Do you mind getting us some kitchen roll, butter, and another life-sized Vicky McClure cardboard cutout plz.’ Another user, Leigh, asked: ‘Who is going to Tesco to do their weekly shop and thinking I know what I need. A Yungblud cardboard cutout?’
Even more confusing is the inclusion of a cutout of One Direction’s Liam Payne, who tragically passed away earlier this week. This unexpected addition to the line has only added to the bizarre nature of Tesco’s offering.
The cutouts are available in the ‘party essentials’ section of Tesco’s website, sold through their marketplace. They arrive separately from your standard grocery order. Tesco explains: ‘All Tesco Marketplace products are sold and dispatched directly from our trusted partners and delivered by post or courier. All Tesco grocery orders are sold and delivered by us, from either your local store or one of our fulfilment centres. This means that, even when you order Marketplace products and groceries at the same time, they’ll be delivered separately.’
This isn’t the first time cardboard cutouts have made headlines this week. Actor Andrew Garfield attended the UK premiere of the ‘We Live In Time’ movie with a cardboard cutout of his co-star Florence Pugh, after scheduling conflicts prevented her from attending. Did he pick her up at Tesco? We can only speculate.
