Tesla Model Y Dominates Norway, Proving EVs Thrive in Cold Climates

Tesla’s Model Y is proving that electric vehicles can thrive even in cold climates. With over 60,000 Model Ys on the road in Norway, Tesla has made it the best-selling EV in the Nordic country, surpassing the number of gasoline-powered cars. This accomplishment comes as a direct rebuttal to claims that EVs struggle to perform in colder climates.

Tesla proudly highlighted this success on its social media platforms, stating, “We were told EVs don’t work in colder climates. There are now more EVs than petrol cars on the road in Norway.” This statement serves as a powerful counterpoint to skeptics who have long argued that EVs are not practical in cold weather.

According to the Norwegian Road Federation, there are currently 2.8 million private cars registered in the country. Of these, 754,303 are battery electric vehicles, outpacing the 753,905 gasoline-powered cars. While diesel remains the most popular fuel source in Norway, the rapid growth of EVs is a testament to their increasing acceptance and practicality, even in low temperatures.

This trend is reflected in Norway’s new car registration data. Over 94% of all new car registrations in the country last month were EVs, with the Model Y taking the top spot, accounting for 19% of overall vehicle sales. Other popular EVs in Norway include the Volvo EX30, the Skoda Enyaq, and the Volkswagen ID.4.

Norway’s commitment to sustainable transportation is evident in its ambitious goal of making all new cars sold in the country zero-emission vehicles by 2025, years ahead of the European Union’s target. The widespread adoption of EVs like the Tesla Model Y shows that Norway is well on its way to achieving this goal, and that electric vehicles are a viable option even in cold climates.
