Tesla Recalls 1.68 Million Cars in China for Trunk Safety Issue

Tesla is recalling 1.68 million cars in China due to a potential safety hazard related to the trunk latch. This recall, announced by China’s market regulator late Tuesday, affects a significant portion of Tesla’s vehicles produced in recent years. The affected models include imported Model S and Model X vehicles, as well as domestically made Model 3 and Model Y cars manufactured between October 15, 2020, and July 17, 2024.

The recall notice highlights the concern that an unlocked trunk lid could open while driving, potentially interfering with the driver’s vision. While the notice doesn’t specify whether this has actually happened in any Tesla cars, the potential for such an event warrants immediate action.

Tesla will address this issue through a remote software upgrade, which aims to ensure the vehicle alerts the driver when the trunk is not securely closed. For vehicles with faulty trunk latches, Tesla will provide free repairs.

This recall comes at a time when Tesla is facing increasing competition in the Chinese market from local electric vehicle makers. Despite price cuts and low-interest financing, Tesla reported a significant decline in second-quarter net income last month, underscoring the challenges it faces in maintaining its market share. China remains a key market and production base for Tesla, making this recall a significant event for the company.
