Tesla Inc. is recalling 9,136 Model X vehicles in the U.S. due to a potential safety hazard. The recall, affecting only 2016 model year SUVs, focuses on cosmetic trim pieces on the vehicle’s roof. These trim pieces, located on the front and center of the roof, may be attached without primer, leading to a risk of separation while driving. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), this detachment could create a road hazard for other drivers, increasing the likelihood of a crash.
Tesla service centers will address the issue by inspecting the adhesion of the trims and reattaching them if necessary, free of charge. If required, the trims will be replaced entirely. While Tesla is not aware of any crashes, injuries, or deaths related to this problem, they have received 40 warranty claims, 6 field reports, and 125 service reports that may be linked to the issue.
This recall marks the second time Tesla is addressing this specific problem. In 2020, a similar recall was issued, but it appears that the initial fix was insufficient to prevent the cosmetic trim pieces from detaching. This situation highlights the importance of thorough testing and analysis during the development and production of vehicles to ensure long-term safety and reliability.
The latest recall follows a similar incident involving Tesla’s Cybertruck in June. Over 11,000 Cybertrucks were recalled due to concerns about a cosmetic applique separating from the trunk bed trim while driving. These incidents underscore the need for rigorous quality control measures throughout the automotive manufacturing process to minimize the risk of such issues and ensure the safety of drivers and passengers.
