Tesla has made a significant change to its Cybertruck ordering process, simplifying it and prioritizing the limited-edition Foundation Series. This move comes directly from Tesla engineer Wes Morrill, who stated that the previous process was “overly complicated” and the new system reflects current production capabilities.
The Foundation Series Cybertruck is a premium edition, featuring laser-etched badges and exclusive accessories. This limited-edition model will be available only during the first year of deliveries. Previously, only customers with prior reservations for the Cybertruck could obtain a Foundation Series. Now, the Foundation Series is the primary option on the Cybertruck order page, even for customers without reservations.
The Foundation Series comes with two variants: the all-wheel drive model starting at $99,990 and the higher-end Cyberbeast variant priced at $119,990. In contrast, the non-Foundation Series Cybertruck offers three variants, including the rear-wheel drive version starting at $60,990, which is slated for release in 2025.
This website revamp has prompted concerns about the demand for the Cybertruck and the availability of the cheaper rear-wheel drive variant. However, Morrill has confirmed that the website changes do not indicate the cancellation of the RWD version.
This move towards simplifying the ordering process is part of a broader strategy by Tesla to streamline its sales and delivery system. CEO Elon Musk acknowledged in April that the previous system had become “complex and inefficient.” This streamlining effort is also reflected in the company’s recent decision to remove inventory discounts for all its vehicle models in the U.S.
The new emphasis on the Foundation Series Cybertruck highlights Tesla’s focus on producing and delivering a premium version of its highly anticipated electric pickup truck. While the availability of the cheaper rear-wheel drive variant remains to be seen, the company’s decision to simplify the ordering process suggests a shift towards prioritizing the production and delivery of the Foundation Series during the initial rollout of the Cybertruck.
