Tesla, the electric vehicle giant, is reportedly planning to expand its Model Y SUV lineup in China with a new six-seat version. The production of this variant is set to begin in late 2025 at Tesla’s Gigafactory in Shanghai. Sources familiar with the matter have revealed that Tesla has already instructed its suppliers to gear up for a substantial increase in Model Y production within China.
This development suggests that Tesla is looking to tap into a wider segment of the Chinese market with the six-seat Model Y. The current version of the Model Y sold in China only offers five seats. The addition of a six-seat option could appeal to families and those seeking more passenger space.
Tesla first introduced the Model Y in the United States in March 2020 and launched it in China in January 2021. It has become one of Tesla’s most popular vehicles worldwide. While Tesla offers a seven-seat interior option for the Model Y in the United States, this feature is not currently available in China. The seven-seat option in the US comes at an additional cost of $2000.
The six-seat Model Y is expected to be a significant addition to Tesla’s Chinese lineup. It remains to be seen how this new variant will be priced and how it will compare to the existing five-seat model in terms of features and specifications.
