Thailand’s new Prime Minister, Paetongtarn Shinawatra, has outlined her administration’s priorities, emphasizing economic stimulation and continuity with the policies of her predecessor. Following a special cabinet meeting on Saturday, Paetongtarn confirmed that her government will focus on revitalizing the economy, a key challenge facing the nation. She indicated that the new administration will continue the policies implemented by former Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin, with some potential adjustments.
Key areas of focus will include debt restructuring to alleviate financial burdens on individuals and businesses. The government also plans to provide support to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), which play a crucial role in the Thai economy. Additionally, efforts will be made to bolster the agricultural and tourism sectors, crucial contributors to the country’s economic growth.
Paetongtarn’s remarks come as she prepares for a two-day parliamentary meeting scheduled for Thursday and Friday, which will mark the formal beginning of her administration. The meeting will provide an opportunity for the new government to present its plans in detail and engage with lawmakers.
One of the most prominent policies inherited from the previous administration is the digital wallet scheme. This initiative aims to distribute 10,000 baht ($295) to 50 million Thais via a smartphone application. While Paetongtarn confirmed that the scheme will be under review, she did not provide specific details regarding potential adjustments or its implementation timeline. However, she indicated that a portion of the government’s 450 billion baht ($13.4 billion) handout plan will be distributed in cash, suggesting a possible modification to the digital wallet scheme.
The new Prime Minister, the youngest daughter of former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, faces numerous challenges in her new role. Beyond economic concerns, she will also need to navigate potential legal challenges, similar to those that led to the dismissal of her predecessor. As the fourth member of her family to hold the premiership, she will be closely scrutinized and face significant pressure.
