Thailand’s Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin has defended his frequent overseas trips during his first 10 months in office. The real estate tycoon and political newcomer, who became prime minister in August 2023, has made 15 overseas visits. In response to public criticism, Srettha announced a two-month halt to his travels starting in March.
He emphasized that some trips were unavoidable, including those for official meetings of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), as well as visits to China and Japan. Additionally, a trip to Sri Lanka to sign a free trade pact was necessary.
Srettha, known as Thailand’s salesman, explained that other visits aimed to attract trade and investment. He has repeatedly expressed his commitment to luring more foreign investment into the country. “It’s necessary to go,” he stated in pre-recorded remarks aired on a television broadcast on Saturday.
