Thailand’s commitment to sustainable tourism continues to garner global recognition as six Thai destinations have been awarded a prestigious spot in the 2024 Green Destinations Top 100 Stories. This achievement reflects the nation’s growing focus on environmentally friendly and socially responsible travel practices, showcasing the best practices adopted by various regions across the country.
The six honored destinations, nominated by the Designated Areas for Sustainable Tourism Administration (DASTA), were recognized across different categories highlighting their unique contributions to sustainable tourism.
Chiang Khan and Songkhla City, known for their community-driven tourism initiatives, were awarded in the “Thriving Communities” category. These destinations have successfully integrated local communities into tourism development, ensuring benefits are shared and local culture is preserved.
U Thong Ancient City, a historic site, earned recognition for its excellence in “Destination Management.” This recognition acknowledges their efforts in managing the site effectively while ensuring its cultural and historical significance is upheld.
Wiang Phu Phiang Chae Haeng, known for its rich cultural heritage, was honored in the “Culture and Tradition” category for its dedication to preserving local traditions and showcasing them to visitors. This recognition highlights the importance of cultural tourism in Thailand.
Hua Hin, represented by the city’s municipality, was recognized for its commitment to environmental protection in the “Environment and Climate” category. The city’s efforts towards sustainable practices, such as waste management and eco-friendly initiatives, have earned them this prestigious recognition.
Uthai Thani Old Town, submitted by its municipality, was celebrated for its dedication to upholding the rich cultural traditions of the region, highlighting the importance of preserving local culture and traditions. Their efforts in promoting cultural awareness and heritage tourism earned them recognition in the “Culture and Tradition” category.
This recognition not only shines a spotlight on these individual destinations but also showcases Thailand’s commitment to promoting sustainable tourism practices. Ms. Thapanee Kiatphaibool, Governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), expressed pride in the achievements of the six destinations, stating that these recognitions reflect TAT’s vision to position Thailand as a sustainable, experience-based tourism destination, aligning with their ‘Amazing Thailand: Your Stories Never End’ communication concept.
These six destinations join a growing list of Thai destinations recognized by Green Destinations, adding to the ten other exemplary stories from Thailand recognized between 2020 and 2023. Among these, two stand out—Huai Pu Keng’s community-based tourism initiative and Ko Mak’s low-carbon destination efforts—were awarded the prestigious Green Destinations Story Awards at ITB Berlin 2023.
Chiang Khan further etched its name in history by becoming the first ASEAN destination to receive the coveted Silver designation in the Green Destinations Award at ITB Berlin 2024. This recognition underscores the destination’s commitment to sustainability and its role in inspiring other destinations in the region.
The Green Destinations Top 100 Stories 2024, announced during a virtual event, was celebrated with an on-site ceremony at the Green Destinations 2024 Global Conference in Chile from October 15 to 17. This year’s edition featured a remarkable collection of Good Practice Stories from 32 countries, further highlighting the global movement towards sustainable tourism practices.
