Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has vehemently criticized the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) allegation that the Congress plans to seize women’s gold jewelry, including mangalsutras. Tharoor vehemently denied these claims and stated that the Congress manifesto makes no mention of wealth redistribution or the confiscation of women’s gold.
Tharoor believes that the BJP’s accusations are a reflection of their growing desperation amid mounting electoral setbacks. He emphasized that the Congress’s focus remains on promoting the welfare of all citizens, regardless of religion.
In the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, Tharoor will face a three-cornered contest in the Thiruvananthapuram constituency, with the Communist Party of India (CPI) and the BJP fielding candidates. Tharoor highlighted his 15 years of experience as an incumbent MP and expressed confidence in his ability to overcome any anti-incumbency sentiment.
Despite the BJP’s efforts to capitalize on Hindu sentiments in the constituency, Tharoor remains confident that the politics of communal hatred hold little appeal in the southern region of India.
The BJP, which has never won a Lok Sabha seat in Kerala, has fielded Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar against Tharoor. Chandrasekhar, who is of Malayali heritage but born outside of Kerala, will challenge Tharoor, who was born in the United Kingdom.
As the Congress aims to retain its hold on the Thiruvananthapuram seat, the BJP seeks to make inroads into the ruling CPI’s stronghold and secure a victory in the Kerala capital.
