This summer promises a whirlwind of events: Love Island, the Euros, Glastonbury, and more. With all the festivities comes the inevitable – a good dose of booze. While we all have our favorite hangover remedies, a nutritional therapist has shared a scientifically backed breakfast to help you bounce back.
Cara Shaw, a nutritional therapist, explains that a hangover recovery breakfast needs to accomplish two key things: stabilize blood sugar and support the overworked liver.
“If you’ve been boozing all day, especially on beer or sugary cocktails, your blood sugar will be fluctuating in the early hours,” says Cara. “To support your blood sugar levels, eat breakfast within 90 minutes of waking. Opt for high-protein options.”
As for the liver, alcohol puts significant pressure on it, requiring extra support. “Adequate protein, B vitamins, and antioxidants will aid in detoxification,” she explains.
So, what should your hangover breakfast consist of? Forget the bacon sandwich; the best option is packed with vegetables. Cara suggests a breakfast bowl including:
*
Scrambled eggs:
Provides high-quality protein for blood sugar control and liver support.*
Spinach:
Packed with antioxidants to help flush out toxins and support liver function.*
Avocado:
Contains healthy fats and antioxidants to replenish energy and support liver detoxification.*
Cherry tomatoes:
Low in calories, rich in vitamins, and packed with antioxidants to support your body’s recovery. To complete the recovery process, Cara recommends a cup of Matcha tea. “Matcha is much lower in caffeine than coffee and loaded with antioxidants to give your body a boost.”
She recommends drinking your caffeinated beverage after a meal to prevent cortisol spikes, which is particularly important when hungover.
So, ditch the greasy bacon and opt for a nutritious and science-backed breakfast to help you recover from a night of revelry. Your body will thank you for it!
