The Broncos’ Quarterback Conundrum: Nix, Penix, or Trade-Up?

Amidst the upcoming 2024 NFL Draft, the Denver Broncos are actively considering their options for acquiring a quarterback. One prominent name that has been linked to the Broncos is Bo Nix, the talented signal-caller from Oregon. According to reports, the Philadelphia Eagles may be willing to trade up from pick No. 22 to No. 12 to secure the services of Nix. Such a move would bolster Philadelphia’s defense with Toledo Rockets cornerback Quinyon Mitchell, while also keeping the door open for the Broncos to ultimately land Nix.

However, other reports suggest that the Broncos could make a more significant move, jumping up to the No. 10 spot to select Nix. Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated has indicated that Denver has been diligently evaluating Nix in the lead-up to the draft, which is set to commence on Thursday night. Additionally, former Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning has revealed Denver’s keen interest in Michigan’s J.J. McCarthy.

Despite these reports, some experts believe that a team like the Minnesota Vikings could outbid the Broncos in a potential trade to move up for a quarterback. Meanwhile, others posit that Washington’s Michael Penix Jr. could emerge as a top-10 draft pick. The prevailing assumption is that Caleb Williams (USC), Jayden Daniels (LSU), Drake Maye (North Carolina), and McCarthy will be the first four quarterbacks taken off the board.

A recent analysis suggests that Nix is the most likely quarterback prospect among those mentioned to slip out of the first round. However, his stock could potentially rise if Penix is already off the table when the 12th pick arrives. The Las Vegas Raiders (No. 13) and the Seattle Seahawks (No. 16) have both expressed interest in Penix, and they could view Nix as a viable alternative.

Despite Denver’s apparent desire to trade up for Daniels, Maye, or McCarthy, such a move might prove challenging. As a result, the Broncos may adopt a wait-and-see approach, hoping that Penix falls to No. 12 on Thursday before trading that pick to a team that is not seeking a quarterback. Alternatively, Denver could potentially choose between Penix and Nix at No. 22 should both prospects remain available.
