The Independent, in partnership with the Music Venue Trust (MVT), has launched Main Stage, an initiative dedicated to supporting and celebrating grassroots music venues across the United Kingdom. This initiative comes amidst concerns that the grassroots music venue sector is facing a severe crisis, with an average of two venues closing permanently each week in 2023.
Grassroots music venues serve as vital platforms for emerging talent, with countless renowned British artists having started their careers on these modest stages. Despite their significance, these venues often face financial challenges and a lack of recognition compared to larger venues.
To address these challenges, Main Stage will highlight one grassroots venue from each of the UK’s 12 regions, providing them with a platform to showcase their work and the impact they have on their local communities. Each featured venue will receive £5,000 worth of advertising inventory, promotion on The Independent’s social media channels, and the opportunity to use The Independent’s logo on their website and social media for one year.
The initiative will also provide ongoing support and resources to the featured venues, helping them to navigate the challenges they face and continue to play a vital role in the UK’s music scene. The Independent’s goal is to raise awareness of the importance of grassroots music venues and encourage greater support for these cultural hubs.
The launch of Main Stage underscores The Independent’s commitment to supporting emerging artists and the grassroots music scene. By providing a platform for these venues, The Independent aims to contribute to the long-term sustainability and vitality of the UK’s music industry.
