During a late-night walk in 2015, ‘The Jinx’ director Andrew Jarecki was startled to see Robert Durst’s distinctive yellow Smart car parked outside his New York apartment. Episode five of his documentary had just aired, implicating Durst in three murder investigations. Concerned, Jarecki sought reassurance from his doorman, who mistook the situation and apologized for parking his own car in front of the building.
Jarecki shared that Durst had displayed his unique ‘canary yellow’ Smart car during filming. Upon returning home, Jarecki inquired about the vehicle, only to discover the doorman’s error. Relieved, Jarecki embraced the doorman and expressed his gratitude.
The Independent questioned Jarecki’s editorial decision to rearrange Durst’s microphone confession in the bathroom, a move that became central to Durst’s trial defense. Jarecki maintained his position, stating that the prosecution never intended to use the film footage and that Durst’s lengthy and rambling bathroom remarks would have made for an anticlimactic ending. He emphasized that the edited recording served as crucial evidence against Durst.
‘The Jinx – Part Two’ will delve into the aftermath of the documentary’s national exposure, following Durst’s trial, conviction, and subsequent death in 2022. The series is set to premiere in the US on April 21st and will be available in the UK from April 22nd.
