The Layout’s Juneteenth Celebration: A Celebration of Black Joy and Community in Fort Greene Park

The Layout, a Brooklyn-based community initiative, transformed Fort Greene Park into a vibrant celebration of Black joy, cultural expression, and economic empowerment on June 16th. The annual event, now in its fifth year, drew thousands of attendees, many sporting their best Western attire, creating a joyous atmosphere that echoed the spirit of Juneteenth.

Founded by a group of passionate individuals after the murder of George Floyd, The Layout aims to create spaces where Black people can reclaim their time, energy, and most importantly, their sense of community. This year’s event was a testament to this mission, offering a diverse array of activities and experiences for all ages.

A striking community floral wall, built by attendees placing flowers into a mural, served as a stunning backdrop for the day’s festivities. The event featured a bustling marketplace showcasing the talents and products of over 40 Black-owned businesses, offering a unique opportunity for attendees to support local entrepreneurs and discover new brands.

The air vibrated with music and laughter as families, business owners, and pedestrians danced under the shade of the park’s trees to the sounds of Quiana Parks, DJ 9am, DJ King SZN, Olivia Dope, and the BLKID Twins. Picnic blankets dotted the park, creating pockets of conversation and shared joy.

For those seeking a more active experience, The Layout’s BuyBLK. ByBLK. Pop Up initiative offered a chance to engage with the community and support local businesses. The Brooklyn Nets and New York Liberty also joined the festivities, organizing basketball-related activities for families and community members.

Beyond the lively celebrations, The Layout continued its partnership with The Infatuation and One Love Community Fridge, distributing 750 bags of fresh produce to NYCHA residents in Fort Greene, demonstrating their commitment to social good and community support.

No New York event is complete without a showcase of fashion, and The Layout’s Juneteenth celebration did not disappoint. The crowd was a vibrant tapestry of styles, with riding boots, protective vests, and cowboy hats adding a touch of rodeo chic to the summer festivities. The event was a resounding success, showcasing the strength, resilience, and joy of the Black community in Brooklyn and beyond.
