Vintage bags have become the ultimate status symbol among the street-style set in recent years, with iconic styles like the Gucci Jackie and the Dior Saddle enjoying renewed popularity. But a new favorite has emerged on the fashion scene: the Louis Vuitton Neo Speedy. This iconic bag, first launched in 2005 under the creative direction of Marc Jacobs, is a denim update on the classic Speedy, featuring two large pockets and zip detailing at the front. Seen on the likes of Jessica Simpson back in the day, it’s no surprise that the Neo Speedy is making a comeback, fueled by the ever-growing trend for Noughties nostalgia.
In fact, Louis Vuitton’s recent re-issue of its denim monogram designs in the LV Remix collection has further fueled the bag’s revival. “Ever since the release of this new collection, we have seen a huge spike in buy prices for these [vintage] denim pieces,” Gabriel Rylka, founder of Break Archive , tells Vogue. “The re-issue of the denim monogram proves that denim bags are here to stay, so consumers are happy to invest into these lasting pieces.”
It’s not just the Neo Speedy making a comeback, but also the Louis Vuitton Baggy, another 2005 design. This slouchy bag features the same monogram denim and pocket detailing as the Neo Speedy, but in a more relaxed shape. The Baggy was spotted on the arms of numerous street stylers during London Fashion Week, suggesting that it might be time to start hunting for one.
While Louis Vuitton’s classic monogram bags will always be popular, the Neo Speedy and Baggy offer a more under-the-radar option that’s perfect for autumn. Pair them with a suede jacket and jeans for a casual look, or a trench coat and cosy knit for a chic ensemble.
“The versatility of denim [makes it] easy to style,” notes Rylka. Not only that, denim is a material that looks better with age – proving that it really is better to buy second-hand.
