The Group B contestants of The Masked Singer brought their A-game for Girl Group Night. Cleocatra, the regal feline, showcased her vocal prowess with a fiery rendition of En Vogue’s ‘Free Your Mind’ and a jazzy arrangement of TLC’s ‘Waterfalls’ in a head-to-head battle with Seal. However, despite her impressive performances, Cleocatra’s journey on the show came to an end on Wednesday, revealing the identity of none other than the multi-talented Jenifer Lewis.
Lewis, who had previously suffered a harrowing fall off a balcony while vacationing in Africa, was determined to showcase her resilience on The Masked Singer. Despite being about five months into her recovery and unable to walk or bear much weight on her legs, she decided to harness her passion for performance and take on the challenge.
To accommodate Lewis’ ongoing recovery, the Masked Singer team creatively designed her costume and stage presence. During her first performance, they secured her to the floor in a harness, allowing her to deliver a captivating performance while remaining stationary from the waist down. By the time Girl Group Night arrived, Lewis had progressed in her recovery and was able to stand with the support of the microphone.
Unsurprisingly, Lewis’ distinct voice made it difficult for the judges to keep her identity a secret, particularly for Ken Jeong, who recognized her immediately. Lewis, known for her powerful vocals, acknowledged the challenge of maintaining anonymity, stating that ‘everybody knows Jenifer Lewis’ voice.’
Despite her early departure from the competition, Lewis emphasized the significance of her participation. She viewed her performances on The Masked Singer as a ‘triumphant testimony’ to her resilience. She encouraged everyone to embrace the power of getting back up after facing challenges, whether they be in relationships, with family, or with friends.
As Lewis continues her rehabilitation after a year and a half, she credits The Masked Singer with lifting her spirits and providing her with a platform to showcase her indomitable spirit.
