The Princess Diaries 3 is Officially Happening!

Get ready to revisit Genovia! Disney has officially announced that ‘The Princess Diaries 3’ is in development, bringing back the beloved character of Mia Thermopolis, played by Anne Hathaway. The news was shared by Hathaway herself on Instagram, where she quoted the iconic line from the original film, “Shut up!” She also shared her excitement about the project, writing: “Miracles happen. I’m going back to Genovia for a third Princess Diaries adventure with Adele Lim and Disney, somewhere Pictures. The story continues.”

The original ‘The Princess Diaries,’ released in 2001, was a box office hit, captivating audiences with its heartwarming story about a shy teenager who discovers she is heir to the throne of the fictional European country of Genovia. The film was based on Meg Cabot’s novel of the same name. The success of the first film led to the creation of ‘The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Wedding’ in 2004, showcasing Mia’s journey into adulthood and her preparation for her royal wedding.

‘The Princess Diaries 3’ will be directed by Adele Lim, known for her work on films like ‘Crazy Rich Asians’ and ‘Raya and the Last Dragon.’ This project will mark Lim’s second feature film as a director, following her directorial debut with ‘Joy Ride,’ set to release in 2023. Lim expressed her enthusiasm for the project, stating, “As a huge fan of the original film, I’m thrilled to be involved in this third installment of the beloved series. I’m excited to celebrate the power and joy of women, and mentorship, with audiences worldwide.

The third film will be produced by Debra Martin Chase, who produced the original films, and Anne Hathaway will be involved as a producer through her production company, Somewhere Pictures. The screenplay will be penned by Flora Greeson, known for her work on the film ‘The Next Dream,’ starring Dakota Johnson. While specific details about the plot are still under wraps, it’s confirmed that ‘The Princess Diaries 3’ will be a direct sequel to the first two films, offering a continuation of Mia’s journey rather than a reboot. Fans are eagerly anticipating the next chapter in the Princess Diaries saga, hoping for more charming moments, royal adventures, and the return of beloved characters like Mia’s grandmother, Queen Clarisse Renaldi, played by the iconic Julie Andrews.
