Get ready for an adventure unlike any other! South Africa is set to host The Ratel, an innovative adventure race taking place in the breathtaking Richtersveld region from June 4th to 15th, 2025. Organized by No Frills. No Fuss, this event marks a significant milestone, serving as a qualifier for the Adventure Racing World Championship in South Africa for the first time in over a decade.
The Ratel builds upon the legacy of Expedition Africa (EA), a renowned race led by Heidi and Stephan Muller since 2011. With a deep appreciation for the Mullers’ contributions to the adventure racing community, No Frills. No Fuss, guided by Stephan Muller himself, aims to continue the tradition of excellence. Race Director Robert Le Brun shares his excitement, stating, “This journey will be meaningful and timeless, offering an adventure that will captivate you, challenge you, and be memorable in ways you will relive repeatedly. Our no-frills, no-fuss approach ensures the focus remains on pure adventure—navigating route choices, enduring tough conditions, and tackling tricky terrain.”
The race will take participants on a 450km journey through the stunning Richtersveld landscape, described by Robert as an “extraordinary river, lush with green vegetation, threading through an otherwise arid expanse, acting as the region’s lifeblood.” Teams will navigate towering peaks, wild expanses, white-water rivers, boulder-strewn slopes, and surreal arid plains, creating a truly unique adventure experience.
Heidi Muller, previous organizer of Expedition Africa and current ARWS CEO, expresses her support for The Ratel, stating, “Expedition Racing in South Africa is in good hands with Robert and his No Frill.No Fuss team and it’s wonderful to pass the baton on to the next generation and see a new ARWS Qualifier in South Africa. Robert is passionate about adventure racing and has taken part in our Expedition Africa races himself over many years. I’m sure he will deliver a pure African AR experience and it’s a once-in-a-lifetime chance to race in the Richtersveld, which has not been used for a big expedition race for two decades.”
Registration for The Ratel opens on September 27, 2024, with early bird slots available. Teams of four and seasoned pairs are invited to participate, with the entry fee including boat provision, comprehensive race logistics, and traditional South African boma braai (barbecue) festivities. Winners of The Ratel will secure complimentary entry into the 2025 AR World Championship, to be held at Expedition Canada.
