The Arabian leopard, the smallest subspecies of leopards, holds a special place in the history and culture of the Arabian Peninsula. Its historical presence in AlUla, documented by ancient inscriptions, is a testament to the harmonious relationship between humans and wildlife. Recognizing the urgent need for conservation, dedicated individuals and organizations have joined forces to protect the Arabian leopard. Catmosphere, a non-profit initiative founded in 2021, has played a significant role in raising awareness and promoting the importance of conservation. Through collaborative efforts with the Royal Commission for AlUla (RCU), the Arabian Leopard Fund (ALF), and other partners, educational campaigns have been developed to highlight the Arabian leopard’s nature, behavior, and conservation status.
The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, through Vision 2030 and the Saudi Green Initiative, has demonstrated its commitment to addressing environmental issues and supporting the recovery of the Arabian leopard. The RCU’s breeding program, paired with rewilding initiatives, aims to restore native flora and fauna in areas where they have been lost, providing potential habitats for the reintroduction of the Arabian leopard into the wild.
Furthermore, the efforts to protect the Arabian leopard have culminated in the establishment of February 10th as the ‘National Day for the Arabian Leopard’ in Saudi Arabia and the recognition of ‘International Day of the Arabian Leopard’ by the United Nations General Assembly. This unprecedented recognition highlights the global significance of the Arabian leopard’s conservation and marks the first time an international day has been established by Saudi Arabia.
The Catwalk initiative, a flagship campaign of Catmosphere, has garnered tremendous support worldwide, with nearly 200,000 participants engaging in walks, runs, and cycling events to raise awareness about big cat conservation and environmental issues. The enthusiasm and creativity displayed by participants have been inspiring, demonstrating the power of collective action.
