The runway has always been a platform for the world’s most creative minds, and while it’s the fashion that often steals the show, sometimes it’s the beauty that truly captivates. This year, Maison Margiela’s haute couture presentation for spring/summer 2024 left an indelible mark, thanks in no small part to Pat McGrath’s legendary hyper-real, porcelain skin adorned with chromatic accents that were impossible to ignore.
While the look was undoubtedly dramatic and not easily transferable to everyday wear, it ignited a spark within the beauty community. The cognoscenti, seemingly invigorated, were drawn back to the thrill of experimentation and the joy of expressing themselves through bold makeup. It echoed a sentiment I’d been harboring myself: when was the last time I truly embraced the fun of playing with color and letting my brushes do the talking?
While I wouldn’t be replicating Margiela’s doll-like complexion, I was captivated by the mesmerising color wash of the show, reminiscent of McGrath’s earlier work for Galliano at Dior. At one point, the candy-colored, almost operatic smudges of blush and streaks of vibrant hues across the lids felt like something that could only belong on the runway or a stage costume. But the zeitgeist of today is all about unrestrained self-expression and unapologetic flamboyance. Just think of pop sensation Chappell Roan, whose sensual, kaleidoscopic style embraces excess. Why wait for a special occasion to wear your colors when there is no time like the present?
With the switch flicked and my inner eyeshadow enthusiast eager to break free, I knew it was time to embrace the chaos. Recent runway seasons, with their neon-hued smears and seemingly unintentional specks of glitter, provided the perfect inspiration. It was a process of trial and error, but one filled with endless possibilities. Armed with liners, palettes, an abundance of glitter, and the masterful guidance of local makeup artist Victoria Hwang, all that was left was to let the eye candy speak for itself.
