The early 2000s were a golden era for women’s basketball in my hometown of San Antonio, Texas. The Houston Comets, Dallas Wings, and San Antonio Stars were beacons of athleticism, teamwork, and female empowerment. But the landscape shifted dramatically, with the Comets dissolving and the Stars relocating to Las Vegas. It wasn’t until years later, living in Harlem, that I found myself back in the world of professional women’s basketball. I was drawn to a New York City Pride League event, which eventually led me to my first WNBA game in years—a New York Liberty game.
As I surveyed the crowd at Barclays Center, I was struck by the sheer number of queer basketball fans. It dawned on me then that this space was more than just a game—it was a sanctuary for our community, a place to come together and dream collectively. The energy was palpable, a tangible feeling of hope.
In a world where hope often feels more nostalgic than guaranteed, the WNBA felt like a beacon of renewal. I was inspired to witness this spirit of hope firsthand, so I embarked on a personal journey to attend all 40 regular season New York Liberty games, visiting all 12 WNBA stadiums along the way. I invited friends to join me, creating a shared experience of witnessing history unfold.
In an age of disconnection, apathy, and cynicism, I believe one of the most powerful acts is being a fan. It’s a conscious choice to show up consistently as your full self, to immerse yourself in a collective experience and witness the extraordinary.
For me, this fandom has become more than just cheering on the players—it’s about documenting the people who make up the WNBA community, capturing their stories and their style. From the streets of New York to the courts of Los Angeles, I’ve interviewed hundreds of fans, capturing their passion and individuality through the lens of fashion.
My goal is to create a photo book that celebrates the vibrant, multifaceted community surrounding women’s basketball. But until the championship dust settles, I’m sharing some of my favorite images—a glimpse into the heart and soul of the WNBA, a place where hope blooms and fashion reigns supreme.
