Third Teen Arrested in Deadly Bronx Subway Gang Shooting
A third teen suspect has been arrested in connection with a deadly Bronx subway gang shooting that left innocent bystander Obed Beltran-Sanchez dead and five others wounded.
The 15-year-old suspect, whose name was not released due to his age, was charged with murder, attempted murder, and gun possession.
The shooting occurred on the afternoon of February 12th, as a No. 4 train headed towards the Mount Eden Ave. stop. According to police, two rival gangs boarded the train, one in Harlem and the other at Yankee Stadium. A chance encounter between the gangs sparked an argument that led to a physical fight, and shots were fired as the train pulled into the station.
Three young shooters pulled out 9mm pistols and fired 19 shots, according to police. At least one person was shot on the train, while the others were shot on the platform.
Beltran-Sanchez, a 35-year-old immigrant from Mexico, was shot in the chest and died at St. Barnabas Hospital. He was a hardworking man who had dreamed of returning home to his wife and children.
Three days after the shooting, a 16-year-old was arrested for murder and ordered held without bail. On March 14th, a 14-year-old boy was arrested, and a prosecutor alleged that he fired the shot that killed Beltran-Sanchez.
