Days before the Lok Sabha elections in Kerala, the archdiocese of the Latin Catholic Church in Thiruvananthapuram has revealed that their bank account was frozen by the Union Government. According to a pastoral letter issued on Sunday, this action was taken in response to the fishermen’s protest against the Adani group’s under-construction seaport at Vizhinjam near Thiruvananthapuram. The archdiocese, led by Archbishop Thomas J Netto, stated that it is struggling to meet its routine expenses and the cost of training seminarians due to the frozen accounts. This situation arose after the 2022 seaport protests, which also resulted in violence. The archdiocese had previously clashed with the local BJP leadership during the Vizhinjam protest, which involved fishermen demanding the implementation of rehabilitation packages for the coastal community.
