THOR Industries, Inc. (THO) is leading the way in recreational vehicle (RV) innovation with the introduction of the THOR Test Vehicle, the world’s first hybrid Class A motorhome. This game-changing RV, built on an electric vehicle platform developed in partnership with EV manufacturer Harbinger, is designed to redefine the RV experience with its unique blend of performance, sustainability, and range.
The THOR Test Vehicle boasts a low-emissions gasoline range extender that seamlessly recharges the battery system, offering an impressive estimated range of 500 miles. This hybrid technology is poised to meet the stringent Near-Zero Emission Vehicle standards set by the California Air Resources Board. Bob Martin, president and CEO of THOR Industries, highlights the groundbreaking nature of the hybrid platform and the ongoing partnership with Harbinger, emphasizing their commitment to product differentiation and leadership in the RV industry.
The THOR Test Vehicle is designed specifically for the unique range demands of RVs, exclusively for THOR. This is the first electrified chassis tailored for Class A motorhomes, addressing the concern of range anxiety and enabling greater travel freedom while promoting sustainability. The hybrid chassis is powered by a robust 140-kWh battery pack, complemented by a gasoline range extender and solar rooftop for even more versatility. Its advanced 800-volt electrical system allows for rapid charging at DC Fast Charger stations, making extended journeys more convenient. Charging can also be done at campsites, through the range extender, or via solar energy, providing flexibility for both on-road and off-grid use.
The hybrid platform is more than just a sustainable way to travel. It can also serve as a backup power source for homes and may eventually allow users to sell excess energy back to the grid, further contributing to energy independence. The electric powertrain delivers exceptional acceleration and torque, exceeding the torque of a diesel engine by up to twice the amount, ensuring robust highway performance on challenging mountain roads and tough terrain.
Harbinger’s chassis design incorporates all the essential systems of an EV, including the drivetrain, high-voltage battery system, steering, and brakes. With a double-wishbone front suspension, a steer-by-wire system, and an advanced driver assistance system, the chassis provides a smooth and safe ride, even for large vehicles.
The THOR Test Vehicle is available for test drives by RV dealers at the THOR RV Experience Track during the Elkhart Dealer Open House, the largest dealer event in North America, taking place from Monday, Sept. 23, 2024, in Elkhart, IN. Dealers will have the opportunity to experience this innovative RV firsthand and contribute to its market launch.
The THOR Test Vehicle represents a significant step forward for the RV industry, offering a compelling blend of performance, sustainability, and convenience. With its impressive range, reduced emissions, and innovative technology, the THOR Test Vehicle is poised to revolutionize the RV experience and redefine the future of travel.
