Three Popular Hatchbacks Motorists Should Avoid, According to Automotive Experts

Automotive experts Adam Morris and Jim Hull of the YouTube channel ReDriven strongly advise against buying three specific used hatchbacks due to their history of unreliability and potential high maintenance costs. The models they identified as problematic are the Vauxhall Astra (Holden Astra in Australia), Ford models with EcoBoost engines (2011-2018), and the Chrysler 300C.

Regarding the Vauxhall Astra, Adam Morris warns, “Do not go near an Astra, or as many mechanics call them, a ‘Disastra’, specifically anything from about 1998 until 2009. These things are so bad, we know of wholesalers who won’t take them as a trade-in.” Jim Hull adds, “And, particularly for the older models, they are getting harder to find parts for too. It’s a nightmare to fix them.”

Moving on to Ford models, Jim Hull specifically recommends avoiding vehicles with EcoBoost engines produced between 2011 and 2018. He explains, “Now, the engine in this was actually voted ‘Engine of the Year’ in some stupid category and then proceeded to be one of the worst engines of all time. It’s just utter rubbish.” He also advises, “While we’re talking about Fords, generally avoid anything with an EcoBoost engine or a PowerShift transmission.”

Lastly, Adam Morris cautions against purchasing a used Chrysler 300C, particularly if buyers are seeking a luxurious vehicle. He criticizes the poor build quality, stating, “You’re not a gangster. Driving a 300C is not intimidating anyone, it’s not a scary-looking car, it just looks sad… The build quality in these is just an absolute joke. Not just mechanically, but interior trim, exterior trim. Yeah, don’t buy a 300C.”

In conclusion, Adam Morris and Jim Hull strongly recommend that motorists avoid these three used hatchbacks: the Vauxhall Astra (Holden Astra in Australia), Ford models with EcoBoost engines (2011-2018), and the Chrysler 300C, due to their history of unreliability and potential for costly repairs.
