TikTok Shop Promotes Deadly Lily of the Valley Tea: Doctors Issue Urgent Warning

While TikTok Shop may seem like a convenient place to find a bargain, doctors are sounding the alarm about a dangerous health trend being promoted on the platform. Medical toxicologist Dr. Josh Trabach shared a screenshot on X (formerly Twitter) highlighting a product available on TikTok’s shopping tab that, despite its seemingly harmless appearance, is deadly. The post showcased a pouch of Lily of the Valley tea, recommending consumption two to three times daily. The product, labeled as ‘organic’ and ‘healing,’ is being sold for $14.50 (£11) – but its true cost could be far greater.

Dr. Trabach emphasizes the extreme danger of ingesting Lily of the Valley, stating that it is never safe. He warns, ‘Please don’t drink Lily of the Valley tea (even if it’s for sale on TikTok). The plant is poisonous and can kill you.’ He further explains that consuming this plant can cause vomiting, hyperkalaemia (high potassium levels), dysrhythmia (irregular heartbeat), and even death, adding that all parts of the plant are toxic.

The dangers extend beyond the tea itself. Influencers promoting Lily of the Valley tea on TikTok Shop earn a 15% commission on every sale, potentially putting their followers at risk without realizing the severity of the consequences.

Dr. Masarat Jilani, a resident doctor at Jude, echoes the concerns, stating, ‘Lily of the Valley tea, whatever TikTok influencers would have you believe, is extremely dangerous, has absolutely zero therapeutic benefits, and should never be consumed.’ She explains that Lily of the Valley is a toxic, poisonous plant containing cardiac glycosides, compounds that can severely disrupt heart function, leading to potentially fatal heart arrhythmias.

Ingesting these toxic substances can overwhelm the kidneys, the body’s filter, resulting in acute renal failure. Plantura Magazine reports that just one to five berries from this plant can cause cardiac issues, and even skin or eye contact can lead to irritation. Symptoms of Lily of the Valley poisoning include chest tightness, diarrhea, cardiac arrhythmia, visual disturbances, dizziness, and nausea. If left untreated, cardiac paralysis and cardiac arrest can occur.

Dr. Jilani urges anyone who has ingested Lily of the Valley to seek immediate medical attention. She advises them to explain what they have consumed and to bring any packaging with them. The doctor will then determine the best course of action, which may involve administering treatments to flush out the toxins or restore electrolyte balance.

This incident serves as a stark reminder to be wary of online trends and to prioritize credible sources of health information. Before trying any new remedy or product, especially one promoted through social media, always consult with a healthcare professional. Your health and safety are paramount.
