A TikTok user has gone viral for sharing a recipe for homemade Mountain Dew wine. According to the user, @goldenhivemead, the recipe only requires two ingredients: sugar and yeast.
@goldenhivemead combined Mountain Dew with honey and yeast in a large glass jar and let it ferment for several weeks. He then added baking soda to raise the pH and speed up the fermentation process. After a few more weeks, the wine was finished and had an alcohol content of 13.9 percent.
In a video posted to TikTok, @goldenhivemead said that he was surprised by how well the wine turned out. “To my surprise, this didn’t taste completely like battery acid but more like smooth citrus mead with maybe a slight chemical aftertaste,” he said.
The TikTok has received over 2 million views and has sparked a lot of interest in homemade Mountain Dew wine. Many people have commented on the video, asking @goldenhivemead to try the recipe with other sodas, such as Dr. Pepper or Coke. Others have asked about the caffeine content of the wine, to which @goldenhivemead replied that it remains in the wine after fermentation.
