TikTok’s Legal Challenge to US Ban
Following President Joe Biden’s signing of legislation that could potentially ban TikTok from operating in the United States, the popular short-form video platform has pledged to take legal action against the measure. TikTok’s spokesperson has denounced the law as unconstitutional and declared their intention to challenge it in court, according to NBC reporting.
The legislation, signed by Biden on Wednesday, requires TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, to either sell the app within a 270-day period or face a ban in the U.S. This legislation is part of a larger $95 billion foreign aid package that includes increased funding for Israel, Ukraine, and Taiwan.
In the lead-up to the legislation’s passing, TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew had publicly stated the company’s commitment to defending the platform and utilizing all available legal avenues to do so. The company’s decision to initiate legal action against the ban was widely anticipated after Chew’s earlier statements.
As the situation continues to develop, further updates will be provided.
