The annual Venice Film Festival has been abuzz with celebrity sightings all week long, and all eyes were on the cast of Pedro Almodóvar’s debut of ‘The Room Next Door’. Co-starring the iconic duo, Tilda Swinton and Julianne Moore, the two actresses graced the red-carpet premiere in stunning fashion. Swinton, a Chanel ambassador, exuded elegance in an ethereal grey Chanel couture look, while Moore opted for a glamorous golden sequined Bottega Veneta gown.
This marks Swinton’s second collaboration with the director, having previously starred in his 2020 project, ‘The Human Voice’. In ‘The Room Next Door,’ Almodóvar’s first English-language film, Swinton and Moore portray two longtime friends who worked at the same New York magazine. Their bond is reignited when Moore’s character discovers that Swinton’s has been hospitalized with cancer. The film has been garnering rave reviews, earning a 17-minute standing ovation – the longest of the festival thus far.
“The presentation of [such] a tenderly personal and treasured piece of work as this new film, with my dear comrades Pedro and Julianne, holds such resonance and so many emotional memories for me,” Swinton shared with Vogue.
Given the film’s buzz and anticipation, it was only natural that the two leading ladies brought their A-game to the red carpet. Swinton’s look was inspired by Chanel’s Spring/Summer 2024 couture collection. She chose the label’s pleated, grey chiffon coat, which was intricately embroidered with over 35,000 grey beads, rhinestones, and bejewelled buttons. The statement piece was paired with straight-cut trousers in tulle and silk chiffon.
“There is a tantalising game that Gabrielle Chanel pioneered, and that the house of Chanel continues to play, with the assumptions associated with form and weight,” Swinton explains. “This jacket delighted me on sight, but completely enchanted me when I put it on – super light and soft, supremely comfortable to move in.”
Swinton is no stranger to classic Chanel tweed. Over the years, she has graced numerous events in elegant creations from the French label. However, this time, she was drawn to the light silhouette of her latest look. “[It conjured] a child’s fantasy of Venice – princely and eternal, gossamer and tough at the same time,” Swinton says of the design. “In a forest of grand gowns, the simplicity and modesty of this silhouette feels fresh and supremely modern.” We couldn’t agree more.
