Democratic vice presidential nominee Tim Walz escaped injury on Monday when several cars at the back of his motorcade crashed while traveling from the airport to a campaign stop in Milwaukee. The incident occurred shortly before 1 p.m. local time.
Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign confirmed that she spoke with Walz immediately following the crash and that he was unharmed. The campaign clarified that the crash involved vehicles near the rear of the motorcade, not those closer to the front where Walz, who is also the governor of Minnesota, was riding.
However, a member of Walz’s traveling staff, who was in a van carrying reporters, sustained injuries and was receiving medical attention. A pool report from a reporter traveling in Walz’s motorcade described the incident, stating that others in the van were shaken but appeared to be okay after being “violently thrown forward, as our van slammed into the one in front of us and was hit from behind.”
The cause of the crash is currently under investigation. The incident occurred shortly after Walz and his wife, Gwen, were greeted at the airport by Democratic Rep. Gwen Moore of Wisconsin. The group exchanged greetings, chatted, and posed for a photo before the motorcade departed for the event.
Monday’s campaign stops, marking Labor Day, were Walz’s first aboard the Harris-Walz campaign charter aircraft. The aircraft prominently displays decals of an American flag, the words Harris-Walz, and the slogan “A New Way Forward.”
