A series of unfortunate incidents in Bihar, India, left dozens injured over two days. On Tuesday, a tin roof collapsed during a musical performance at the Mahavir Mela in Chhapra city, injuring over 100 people. The accident occurred when the roof, which had several people standing on it, gave way. Hundreds of people standing underneath were also injured.
Videos circulating on social media show the crowded fair, with people climbing balconies, trees, and even rooftops of nearby buildings to get a better view of the music show. Following the collapse, a chaotic stampede erupted as people screamed and scrambled to escape the site.
Local authorities, alerted by the commotion, quickly responded. Injured individuals were transported to the nearby hospital, with reports indicating that the condition of 10 people is critical.
In a separate incident on Wednesday, a makeshift tent collapsed during a religious procession in the Hishua area of Saran district, injuring at least 10 people. The incident took place around 3 am when a religious procession was passing through the area. Police reported that the tent, which had been set up temporarily for the procession, collapsed when people attempted to climb onto it. All the injured were treated at a nearby government hospital and are reported to be out of danger.
The collapse of both the tin roof and the makeshift tent highlight the importance of structural safety, especially during large gatherings. Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding both incidents to determine the cause of the collapses and to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
