Destination Toledo Renews Certification in Autism Inclusion
Destination Toledo has reaffirmed its commitment to creating a welcoming and inclusive environment for all visitors by renewing its Certified Autism Center™ (CAC) status. This prestigious certification, awarded by the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards (IBCCES), reflects Toledo’s dedication to serving travelers with autism and sensory sensitivities. The renewal builds upon the city’s 2022 initial certification and demonstrates a continued effort to improve accessibility and inclusivity for neurodivergent individuals. The certification ensures that Destination Toledo staff members receive specialized training to understand and support the needs of autistic individuals and their families.
Lance Woodworth, President & CEO of Destination Toledo, emphasized the importance of this certification, stating that it enables the organization to provide the best possible experience for all visitors, particularly those with autism and sensory needs. This initiative aligns with Toledo’s broader goal of becoming a Certified Autism Destination™, a designation that involves collaborating with local attractions, hotels, and venues to enhance accessibility. The city is making significant strides in this area, as evidenced by other recent achievements.
Toledo’s commitment to accessibility is also highlighted by its early adoption of autism-friendly practices. Notably, Toledo Express Airport (TOL) was the first airport in the nation to earn the CAC designation, showcasing its leadership in the field. Furthermore, TARTA Move, the paratransit division of the Toledo Regional Transit Authority (TARTA), became the first transit agency in Ohio to receive CAC certification, earning the Collaborative Excellence Award from the Ohio Public Transit Association. This collaborative effort between Destination Toledo and TARTA underscores the city’s comprehensive approach to fostering an inclusive environment.
With nearly 20 organizations in the Toledo region now holding the Certified Autism Center™ designation, Destination Toledo plays a crucial role in supporting this initiative. Resources such as a Sensory-Friendly Guide to Toledo are available at VisitToledo.org/AutismTravel, providing visitors with accessible travel experiences and helping to build awareness. The IBCCES, a leading organization in training and certifying professionals in autism and other neurodevelopmental conditions, also expressed its support, highlighting the growing demand for welcoming destinations by millions of travelers seeking inclusive travel opportunities.
Myron Pincomb, IBCCES board chairman, praised Destination Toledo’s commitment to fostering an inclusive and accessible environment. IBCCES, established in 2001, is a recognized leader in providing specialized training and certification programs for professionals across diverse sectors, including healthcare, education, and the hospitality industry. Their certification programs ensure that staff in various settings possess the skills to effectively serve individuals with autism and sensory sensitivities.
The creation of AutismTravel.com, a platform showcasing certified professionals and destinations, further supports families seeking accessible travel options. This platform ensures that families can readily find and plan vacations in environments that cater to their unique needs. The robust standards of the Certified Autism Center™ program underpin each listing on the site, providing travelers with confidence in their choices.
Toledo’s proactive approach positions the city as a leader in disability-inclusive travel, enhancing its appeal to a growing and important demographic of travelers. This commitment to accessibility not only improves the visitor experience but also boosts the city’s image as a welcoming and inclusive destination.
