Tom Martins, a passionate pop culture aficionado, faced a familiar dilemma: what to watch on streaming. But then, a suggestion seemed to materialize from the digital ether: the ‘Matrix’ saga, a film series that debuted in 1999 when Martins was just four years old. Re-watching the film ignited a spark, serving as the initial inspiration for his collection showcased at SPFW on Wednesday, August 16th.
Martins’ collection is a vibrant fusion of futuristic elements and retro vibes. The signature motherboards adorned with blue and red-eyed rabbits, referencing the iconic pills from the film, were directly inspired by a Givenchy collection designed by Alexander McQueen in the late 90s. Other renowned designers known for their futuristic aesthetic, like Thierry Mugler and Rick Owens, also influenced Martins’ creative journey.
To embody the concept of a ‘Matrix glitch,’ Martins decided to merge these futuristic elements with his interpretation of the late 1960s hippie movement. Ponchos, bows, maxi belts with fringes, and jeans reconstructed from scraps of materials all come together to create a unique blend of eras.
The collection is a testament to Martins’ creative evolution, showcasing his bold approach to design. Ruffle accents, capes, sweaters adorned with hand-embroidered flowers, and pieces that play with optical illusions like a T-shirt featuring an ‘impressed’ denim vest and ultra-high-waisted jeans that resemble skirts, are just a few of the captivating elements that make this collection one of his most ambitious yet.
Speaking backstage, Martins succinctly summed up his creative philosophy: “Between being right and being wrong, I’d rather be wrong while doing something new.” His collection, a testament to his artistic vision, challenges both himself and the very fabric of the fashion matrix.
