The Cincinnati Open saw a flurry of action on Monday as top seeds advanced through the qualifying rounds and American players made their mark in the main draw.
In the men’s qualifying, Nuno Borges, the top seed from Portugal, secured his place in the main tournament with a convincing 7-6 (4), 6-1 victory over Aleksandar Vukic of Australia.
On the women’s side, Magdalena Frech of Poland, the top seed, also advanced, defeating 14th-seeded Jessica Bouzas Maneiro of Spain 6-1, 6-4.
The American contingent showcased their strength in the main draws. Alex Michelsen, the No. 5 seed, outplayed Mackenzie McDonald 6-3, 6-2. Other American winners included Brandon Holt, who defeated Zachary Svajda, and Aleksandar Kovacevic, who triumphed over Rinky Hijikata.
In the women’s main draw, Taylor Townsend, the No. 12 seed, dominated Katie Volynets 6-0, 6-3. Robin Montgomery and Ashlyn Krueger also secured victories, defeating Martina Trevisan and Naomi Osaka, respectively.
The men’s competition saw a notable upset as Flavio Cobolli of Italy defeated the 10th-seeded Tommy Paul. Yoshihito Nishioka and Corentin Moutet also advanced. In the women’s draw, Harriet Dart of Great Britain defeated Elina Avanesyan. Other notable women’s winners included Lulu Sun, Varvara Gracheva, and Y.F. Wang.
The main draw for both men’s and women’s competition resumes tomorrow, with 12 Americans set to compete across the Lindner Family Tennis Center. Ben Shelton will face Reilly Opelka in the afternoon, while Taylor Fritz will take on Brandon Nakashima in the evening.
