The Topeka Zoo is mourning the loss of Karen, a vibrant and beloved ostrich who died last week after swallowing a foreign object. Karen had been an adored resident since the opening of Giraffe & Friends in March of 2023 and was known for her water-loving habits and playful antics.
The zoo announced Karen’s death in a Facebook post, saying that she had tragically succumbed to complications arising from consuming a foreign object. Zoo officials said that Karen had managed to reach beyond her exhibit fence and grab the keys of a staff member, which she immediately swallowed.
The zoo consulted with experts on how to remove the keys without harming Karen but were unsuccessful.
The zoo is investigating the incident and is taking appropriate actions regarding the staff member involved. The zoo is also reviewing its safety protocols.
Fawn Moser, interim director of the Topeka Zoo, said in a statement that the zoo is devastated by the loss of Karen. She said that Karen was not just an animal but a beloved member of the community and that their thoughts are with the dedicated animal care team who formed deep bonds with Karen during her time at the zoo.
