Tornado Strikes Guangzhou, China, Killing Five and Injuring 33

A tornado struck the southern Chinese city of Guangzhou on Saturday, causing significant damage and loss of life. The twister tore through the Baiyun district in the afternoon, killing five people and injuring 33, according to the state news agency Xinhua.

The tornado caused extensive damage to 141 factory buildings, but no residential houses collapsed. Rescuers from the city’s emergency management, weather, fire, waterworks, and health departments, as well as local residents, were quickly dispatched to the area. Search and rescue operations have been completed.

This tornado comes just over a year after a deadly tornado struck Jiangsu province in eastern China, killing 10 people. The Jiangsu tornado was part of a larger storm system that brought torrential rain, landslides, and evacuations to southeastern China.
