TotalEnergies Begins Construction of Landmark Solar and Storage Project at JFK International Airport

TotalEnergies, a leading global developer of renewable energy solutions, is spearheading this ambitious project, which involves the construction of a solar carport canopy in one of JFK’s long-term parking lots. This carport will generate approximately 12 megawatts (MW) of onsite power, coupled with an additional 7.5 MW of battery storage. This stored energy will be strategically utilized to reduce the airport’s energy consumption during peak demand periods. Notably, around half of the 12 MW generated will be dedicated to powering the AirTrain rail link connecting JFK to the surrounding areas. The remaining portion will be directed to support historically disadvantaged households in the communities encircling the airport, promoting equitable access to clean energy.

TotalEnergies’ expertise in renewable energy development and its global reach make it an ideal partner for this groundbreaking project. The company has recently secured over 1 GW of renewable Power Purchase Agreements with more than 600 industrial and commercial customers worldwide, demonstrating its commitment to empowering businesses with sustainable energy solutions. TotalEnergies’ portfolio encompasses a wide range of renewable energy projects, including large-scale solar, battery storage, onsite B2B solar distributed generation, onshore and offshore wind projects, and aims to generate up to 10 GW of renewable power by 2025 and over 25 GW by 2030.

This project aligns with the Port Authority’s ambitious goal of reaching net zero greenhouse gas emissions across its facilities by 2050. The JFK solar carport is expected to produce sufficient clean energy to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by more than 6,000 tons annually, equivalent to eliminating the greenhouse gas emissions of nearly 1,500 gasoline-powered passenger vehicles driven for a year. This significant reduction in emissions will contribute to improving air quality and mitigating climate change impacts.

TotalEnergies is actively working towards achieving net zero by 2050 and is building a robust portfolio of cost-competitive renewable energy sources, including solar, onshore and offshore wind, combined with flexible assets such as CCGT and storage, to deliver reliable and sustainable power to its customers. The company’s gross renewable electricity generation installed capacity stood at 22 GW at the end of 2023, and it plans to expand this capacity to 35 GW in 2025 and reach over 100 TWh of net electricity production by 2030.

TotalEnergies remains committed to providing reliable, affordable, and sustainable energy to as many people as possible. Its active presence in approximately 120 countries underscores its dedication to driving the global transition towards a cleaner and more sustainable energy future.
