Tottenham Hotspur narrowly avoided a shocking upset in the third round of the English League Cup, emerging victorious from a thrilling encounter against second-division Coventry City. The match at the Coventry Arena saw the home side take the lead in the 63rd minute through Brandon Thomas-Asante’s strike, leaving Tottenham facing elimination.
However, the North London club rallied in the closing stages, with Djed Spence leveling the score in the 88th minute before Brennan Johnson secured the win with a stoppage-time goal. This late comeback victory showcased the resilience and determination of the Spurs side under manager Ange Postecoglou.
Postecoglou acknowledged the challenge posed by Coventry, praising their energetic performance: “Coventry were outstanding with the energy they brought, we had to dig deep today and we found what we needed to win the game.”
Meanwhile, Wolverhampton Wanderers continued their disappointing start to the season, suffering a 3-2 defeat at Brighton and bowing out of the League Cup. Carlos Baleba and Simon Adingra put Brighton ahead, with Goncalo Guedes briefly pulling one back for Wolves before halftime. Ferdi Kadioglu extended Brighton’s lead in the 85th minute, and although Tommy Doyle scored a late consolation for Wolves, it wasn’t enough to salvage the result.
Coventry’s performance was particularly notable, considering their near-miss in last season’s FA Cup semifinal, where they lost to Manchester United on penalties after a 3-3 draw at Wembley. Their spirited fight against Premier League opposition once again highlighted their potential.
