The second stage of the Tour de France saw a dramatic crash involving two key riders for defending champion Jonas Vingegaard. Wout van Aert, riding for Visma-Lease a Bike, and Matteo Jorgenson, the Paris-Nice winner, both went down during the 199.2-km ride from Cesenatico to Bologna.
Van Aert, the Belgian rider, was back on his bike quickly and even gave a thumbs-up to the camera, indicating he was alright. Jorgenson, however, took a bit longer to recover, needing to visit the medical car to have a bruised elbow bandaged by a race doctor.
The incident, which occurred with about 90 kilometers left in the stage, also saw Ineos-Grenadiers rider Laurens de Plus hit the deck. It remains to be seen if this crash will have any lasting impact on the riders’ performance in the rest of the Tour.
