A tragic incident at Bowie High School in Texas has left one student dead and a community in mourning. On Wednesday, April 24, 2024, at approximately 2:50 p.m., reports of shots fired near a portable building on campus reached the Arlington Police Department. Responding officers discovered an 18-year-old male student lying unresponsive on the ground with apparent gunshot wounds. Despite being rushed to a nearby hospital, the victim sadly succumbed to his injuries. The 17-year-old suspected shooter attempted to flee but was apprehended by police near the campus. He now faces murder charges upon being booked into Arlington City Jail.
Families were directed to reunite with their children at a district building miles away from the campus several hours after the shooting occurred. School Resource Officers arrived at the scene to find the 18-year-old student shot. The motive and circumstances surrounding the shooting are still under investigation by law enforcement.
In a statement, Arlington Police Chief Al Jones expressed the community’s heartbreak and condemned such violence. He emphasized that violence in schools or neighborhoods will not be tolerated and that the community stands united with Arlington ISD to ensure schools remain safe spaces for students. Dallas ISD also extended their condolences to the Bowie High School and Arlington ISD community, offering thoughts, prayers, and support during this difficult time.
