The Topeka Zoo & Conservation Center in Kansas announced the heartbreaking news of the passing of their beloved ostrich, Karen, on Friday. The 5-year-old bird passed away in the hands of staff after reaching beyond her exhibit’s fence and swallowing a staff member’s keys.
Despite extensive efforts by staff and consultations with experts around the U.S., non-surgical and surgical procedures to remove the keys proved unsuccessful. The zoo made the difficult decision to euthanize Karen on Thursday.
Karen’s death has left the zoo community devastated. She had been a resident of the zoo since March 2023 and was adored by the staff and visitors alike. Her playful nature and graceful dance moves had earned her the title of ‘dancing queen.’
The Topeka Zoo is conducting an investigation into the incident and is reviewing and enhancing safety protocols for its animals. The zoo is home to over 300 animals and is committed to providing a safe and healthy environment for all its residents.
