A tragic bus accident in north central Florida early Tuesday morning has claimed the lives of eight people and critically injured at least eight more out of the 37 total hospitalized. According to officials, the bus, carrying 53 migrant workers, collided with a truck at approximately 6:35 am on State Road 40, approximately 45 miles south of Gainesville. The impact caused the bus to veer off the road, through a fence, and overturn. Tragically, eight individuals lost their lives in the crash, and the remaining passengers and driver sustained various injuries.
The migrant workers onboard the bus were en route to a watermelon farm when the accident occurred. They were employed by a private firm, and the company’s owner was among those rushed to the hospital. Initially, there were mistaken reports that the tragedy involved schoolchildren, but the Marion County Sheriff’s Office has since clarified that a Marion County Public Schools bus was only used to transport the injured from the scene to the hospital.
In the aftermath of the crash, Florida officials have cordoned off sections of State Road 40 West while they conduct a thorough investigation into the cause of the accident. The Sheriff’s Office has issued a statement urging motorists to plan alternate routes due to the extended road closure.
This devastating incident serves as a somber reminder of the risks associated with road travel, particularly for those who rely on buses for transportation. As authorities continue their investigation, the community mourns the loss of life and extends its heartfelt condolences to the victims’ families and loved ones.
