Tragic Incident: Two Dead, Four Rescued after Fishing Vessel Capsizes off Newfoundland’s Coast

According to the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO), the four survivors managed to swim ashore and set fire to a cabin to attract attention. The Canadian Coast Guard ship CCGS Cape Edensaw responded to the distress call and dispatched a fast rescue craft that recovered the two deceased individuals.

Due to the challenging shoreline and sea conditions, the rescue craft was unable to approach the survivors, who were subsequently airlifted by a Cormorant helicopter from Gander. The helicopter transported the survivors to a hospital for medical attention.

The incident has sparked an outpouring of condolences from government officials and fishing industry members. Gudie Hutchings, the area’s Member of Parliament, expressed her sympathy for the families and community affected by the tragedy.
