In a heart-wrenching case that has shaken a Houston community, a 21-year-old couple, Angelina Belinda Calderon and Fernando Vega, have been charged with the murder of their five-week-old twin daughters. The unthinkable tragedy unfolded on October 4, 2023, when Houston Police responded to an emergency call at a Linden Creek Lane residence. Upon arriving at the scene, officers discovered the lifeless bodies of Massail and Mirena Vega. The preliminary investigation revealed that the infants had suffered extensive injuries, including multiple bruises and fractures, indicating a series of blows inflicted with a blunt object. According to court documents, Vega claimed to have found the twins unresponsive in their crib upon returning from dropping his mother off at work. He asserted that he had left his grandmother to care for the babies during his absence. However, a subsequent autopsy conducted by Dr. Jesus Rico, a pathologist at the Harris County Institute of Forensic Science, contradicted Vega’s account. Dr. Rico meticulously documented numerous injuries on both infants, including dehydration, contusions, and fractures indicative of previous abuse. Dr. Rico concluded that these injuries were intentionally inflicted and should have been recognized and addressed by the girls’ caregivers. The autopsy further revealed that one of the twins’ injuries was consistent with three separate events. On April 18, Dr. Rico officially ruled the cause of death as homicide due to multiple blunt force injuries. Both infants were malnourished, with one exhibiting acute brain bleeding and the other suffering hemorrhaging of the brain and spinal cord, indicative of recent trauma. These injuries, according to Dr. Rico, could have resulted from shaking or direct blunt force trauma. Shockingly, Calderon established a GoFundMe page shortly after her daughters’ deaths, garnering over $1,200 in donations from well-intentioned individuals unaware of the horrific allegations against her and Vega. However, Calderon’s sister vehemently denied her sibling’s involvement, stating in an interview that she was at work at the time of the incident. Despite the sister’s defense, several family members have come forward, alleging that Vega had been abusive towards Calderon. Court records indicate that Vega was recently detained for unlawfully restraining her. While Calderon’s aunt remains convinced of her niece’s innocence regarding the physical harm inflicted on the children, she acknowledges that Calderon may face consequences for other findings uncovered by investigators. Currently, Vega and Calderon are incarcerated with bonds set at $750,000 each. They are scheduled to appear in court for a bail review and preliminary hearing on the charges.
