Ten people have died in Malaysia after two helicopters collided mid-air during a military rehearsal for a Royal Malaysian Navy parade. The incident occurred at the Lumut naval base in the western state of Perak at 9.32am on April 23, the navy said in a statement.
A video showed several helicopters flying in a formation when one of the aircraft’s rotors clipped another before both crashed to the ground.
One helicopter, an AgustaWestland AW139 Maritime Operations Helicopter (HOM), crashed near a stadium at the complex. The second helicopter involved in the incident has been identified as a Eurocopter Fennec, which reportedly fell near a swimming pool.
The Malaysian navy said there were seven crew members on board the Augusta and three on the Eurocopter. All ten individuals on board both helicopters were killed in the crash.
The cause of the collision is under investigation. The Royal Malaysian Navy has expressed its condolences to the families of the victims and has ordered a full investigation into the incident.
