Local train services between Kasara and Titwala stations in Maharashtra’s Thane district, which adjoins Mumbai, were suspended on Sunday morning due to heavy rains and a tree fall. The incident occurred at around 6:30 am, when soil washed onto the tracks between Atgaon and Thansit stations, and a tree fell, blocking the tracks near Vashind station. This disruption affected rail traffic on the busy Kalyan-Kasara route, as reported by PTI citing officials.
“Train services between Kasara and Titwala have been suspended temporarily,” a spokesperson of the Central Railway (CR) said. The tracks were declared unsafe at around 6:30 am, the official added. Another Central Railway spokesperson revealed that an overhead equipment (OHE) pole had tilted, causing the pantograph of a train to become entangled near Vashind.
Teams are working diligently to clear the tracks and restore normalcy as quickly as possible. Suburban services are crucial for Mumbai and neighboring regions like Thane, Palghar, and Raigad, serving as a vital lifeline for daily commuters. The Central Railway’s suburban network carries over 30 lakh passengers daily.
Mumbai and its surrounding regions experienced moderate to heavy rain showers on Sunday morning. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted these conditions to persist throughout the day in both the city and its suburbs. Over the next week, Mumbai and the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) are expected to receive light to moderate rains accompanied by occasional thunderstorms. This welcome precipitation follows a scorching hot and humid summer, significantly lowering the city’s temperature.
