Traverse City, Michigan Becomes First Certified Autism Destination in the Midwest

Traverse City, Michigan has taken a significant step towards becoming a beacon of inclusivity for autistic individuals and their families. In September 2023, the city embarked on a transformative journey to become a Certified Autism DestinationTM (CAD), a designation awarded by the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards (IBCCES). This achievement signifies a commitment to creating a welcoming and supportive environment for all visitors, regardless of their unique needs.

Traverse City Tourism spearheaded the initiative, leading 19 local entities, including accommodations, recreational venues, and entertainment establishments, through a rigorous certification process. The goal was to enhance the travel experience for autistic and sensory-sensitive guests by ensuring their needs were met and that they felt comfortable and supported.

To achieve Certified Autism CenterTM (CAC) status, venues underwent a thorough process, including specialized training for their frontline staff and on-site reviews by IBCCES. This ensures that staff are equipped with the knowledge and skills to understand and effectively interact with individuals on the autism spectrum.

“We’re immensely proud to recognize Traverse City as the first Certified Autism DestinationTM in the Midwest,” states Myron Pincomb, IBCCES board chairman. “This achievement highlights the community’s commitment to inclusivity for visitors and will make a huge impact for millions of travelers. We know that so many families and individuals are looking for organizations and destinations to differentiate their offerings by focusing on accessibility and inclusion, and this is a huge step toward fostering a sense of belonging and understanding that will resonate far beyond the Traverse City borders.”

The certification process addressed a crucial issue: 78% of autistic individuals or their parents hesitate to travel or explore new places, often due to concerns about accessibility and lack of understanding. The CAD designation helps to alleviate these concerns by providing a more inclusive and supportive environment, setting Traverse City apart as a destination that prioritizes the needs of its diverse visitors.

The designation is not a one-time achievement. IBCCES continues to conduct ongoing on-site evaluations to ensure that certified venues remain appealing and accommodating for families affected by autism. This commitment to ongoing assessment and improvement is vital to maintaining the integrity of the CAD designation and ensuring that Traverse City continues to be a welcoming and accessible destination for all.

The drive for autism-friendly communities is increasingly vital, particularly within the tourism and entertainment sectors. With statistics showing that one in 36 children is diagnosed with autism and one in six Americans has sensory sensitivities, the need for inclusive and accommodating environments has become more pressing than ever. Traverse City, with its commitment to becoming a Certified Autism Destination, is leading the way in creating a more welcoming and accessible world for all.
