TriMet, in celebration of Earth Day, proudly unveils its plans to triple its electric bus fleet, significantly enhancing Portland’s transportation landscape. With the introduction of five new 24 battery electric buses, TriMet’s fleet now boasts 15 zero-emission buses powered by renewable energy.
Mark Miller, TriMet’s Public Information Officer, emphasizes the buses’ environmental benefits, stating that they contribute no greenhouse gas emissions. This initiative aligns with TriMet’s commitment to improving environmental quality and achieving sustainability in the region. The buses’ extended battery capacity and flexible charging capabilities enable them to cover a wider range of routes, with an estimated range of 150 miles per charge.
Moreover, TriMet prioritizes equitable distribution by deploying these buses in areas with lower air quality and historically marginalized populations. This ensures that the benefits of greener transportation are accessible to all. TriMet remains committed to its long-term goal of a 100% zero-emissions bus fleet by 2040 and carbon neutrality by 2050. Currently, testing and training are underway for these new electric buses, which are expected to enter service by late spring.
