Trinity Rodman, a key player for the US Women’s National Team (USWNT), will be sidelined for a trio of upcoming friendlies as she continues to recover from a back injury. The news was confirmed by USWNT Head Coach Emma Hayes, who announced her roster for the matches against Iceland and Argentina on Thursday. These friendlies mark the team’s first outings since claiming gold at the Paris Olympics.
Rodman, known for her dynamic play and powerful runs on the pitch, sustained a severe back spasm during a National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) match against the Kansas City Current last month, forcing her to leave the field in a wheelchair. Despite the setback, she recently returned to action as a substitute in the Washington Spirit’s victory over Racing Louisville last weekend, showcasing her resilience in her comeback bid.
While Rodman’s absence will be felt, the USWNT is brimming with talent. Coach Hayes has called up 26 players for the camp, with 23 set to feature in each match. The roster boasts a mix of seasoned veterans, including 18 members of the gold medal-winning Olympic team, and six exciting newcomers who could make their debuts for the USWNT. These newcomers include midfielder Hal Hershfelt, defender Emily Sams, center back Eva Gaetino, defender Alyssa Malonson, forward Yazmeen Ryan, and forward Emma Sears.
The USWNT will also honor veteran defender Kelley O’Hara with a retirement ceremony at halftime of the match against Iceland in Nashville, showcasing the team’s appreciation for her contributions to the national team.
As the USWNT prepares for these upcoming friendlies, coach Hayes expressed her pride in the team’s recent accomplishments, emphasizing that the team’s focus remains on achieving new heights. The USWNT will look to build on its momentum as it prepares for the upcoming FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand next year.
